Individual Psychotherapy For Adults

Why seek therapy?
-
Life is not always the peaceful, happy, smooth sailing experience we want it to be. Everyone faces difficult times…anxious times, scary moments, sad moments, blindsiding moments or moments we saw coming in the distance that have now, at last, arrived.

-
Sometimes just the mere thought of ‘what could be’ is the scary moment. All the ‘what ifs’ can lead to significant anxiety that results in avoiding people, places and situations. You might even experience physical symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks.

-
Whether this anxiety stems from your day-to-day life, disasters you never anticipated or fears about the future, challenges and hardship are part of the human experience. They are not pathological. There is no shame in acknowledging you have feelings. Trying to overcome them is the braver thing to do.

Therapy is a good first step along the path to better managing your feelings, facing your fears and taking charge of your life. This is where I come in! I provide individual psychotherapy in NY. Come meet me, Dr. Barbara Gluckin, in my Great Neck office or see me by telehealth.
How can therapy help?
Anxiety can make you feel like you are rowing a boat alone in the middle of the ocean during a hurricane…nothing but wind, rain and water in sight. I am not telling you therapy will improve the weather. I am telling you that individual psychotherapy can provide you with the insight, support and tools you need to more confidently weather the storm…
just like an experienced captain steering a strong, steady ship.
That’s what therapy is with a licensed clinical psychologist. It doesn’t magically change your life or give you the answers, but it can help you find your way out of the storm.

What does therapy entail?
Different challenges call for different techniques to help you progress. Therapy with a clinical psychologist might include education about what you are experiencing. It might involve teaching you coping skills such as anxiety management, relaxation techniques or distress tolerance. It could involve improving communication skills or assertiveness skills. It can teach you techniques to help you see things from different perspectives. It could include identification and exploration of personal strengths, thoughts, feelings, actions, past experiences, and current stressors. You will set the pace and it is always OK to say you need to go more slowly.
Can’t I just talk to a friend?
Therapy with a clinical psychologist is not the same as just talking to a friend. In individual therapy, unlike friendship, you will be working towards goals you wish to accomplish. For example, you might strive to reduce the intensity of your anxiety, or be able to think things through without spiraling for hours, or eliminate panic attacks, or be able to sleep through the night, or accept the reality of a painful situation, etc.
Also, unlike friendships (which are reciprocal), in individual psychotherapy, the focus is only on you…on what you want and need to have a more fulfilling life or improved sense of well-being.
